The Manhattan School for Children provides a number of on-site services to help students maximize their learning potential. These include but are not limited to:
Learning Specialists: An on-staff learning specialist works with children in all grades who have been identified as having special learning needs. An individualized program is designed that may include one-on-one or small group activities in a well-equipped resource room.
AIS: An Academic Intervention Support teacher works with individuals and small groups in grades 1 through 3. Lessons are planned to meet the specific needs of the children, particularly with decoding, reading fluency and comprehension.
Programs are chosen to support students with specific learning strengths and needs. For example, in reading students might participate in the following:
Reading Rescue: The on-staff reading/language arts specialist and paraprofessionals work outside the classroom one-on-one. This special reading activity is targeted to grade 1 and 2 students. The specialist also acts as a resource for the classroom teacher. Daily 30-minute lessons usually last four to five months until the child is reading on Benchmark Level.
Wilson Fundations Reading: This plan emphasizes phonological/phonemic awareness, phonics and spelling for the general education classroom in kindergarten through third grade. Fundations serves as a prevention program to help reduce reading and spelling failure.
Speech and Language: Children who need assistance in speech and language are referred to the Speech and Language specialist on staff. An individualized program is designed for each student to meet his or her needs.
Physical and Occupational Therapy: Occupational and Physical assistance therapy assistance is available as needed through privately contracted agencies. Services are provided on-site at MSC.
English Language Learners: All students who come to our school with English as a second language are evaluated for support with ESL services. A specialist on staff provides students requiring support with English services both individually and within the classroom.
