Dance at MSC provides another opportunity for personal expression and promotes physical strength and development. The Manhattan School for Children Dance Program has a full-time dance teacher in a dedicated studio and is unique in the public school system. Many exercise and arts programs in schools have borrowed elements of dance, offering programs usually named “Movement” and taught by a teacher who is not a dancer or a dance teacher. MSC students, in contrast, are taught the aesthetic beauty, the demanding technique and the fundamental elements of the art form of dance by exploring shapes moving through space in time. At MSC, dance classes are taught as problem-solving experiences rather than as recreation. We work with dance as a complete mind and body experience. Dance requires the participant to be totally present in thought and body awareness. This is challenging for young learners. Dancing is a natural burst of energy that students enjoy; the extra challenge of solving problems while moving is a multi-faceted experience. Infusing problem solving into dance activities promotes a physical awareness of a personal range of motion of the students' bodies.
