  • Meet the Staff (Part 2)

In last month's newsletter we introduced the classroom and core teachers. This month we introduce the "specials," the out-of-class teachers who have specialized classes and teach all the students.

Maxima Almonte - Educational Assistant: This is my third year working at the Manhattan School for Children. I am the proud mother of two children, both of whom go to MSC. I enjoy working with all the staff and children at MSC. During the summer I spent all my time on vacation with my children, enjoying our time together, bonding, and showing all that life has to offer.

Michelle Boenig - Visual Arts Studio at the Upper School: I am a graduate of Parsons School of Design and am currently getting my Master's at The Maryland Institute College of Art. I taught at the Dalton School for two years and completed my student teaching at Bank Street College. I am excited to be a part of the teaching team of MSC and am looking forward to an exciting year with all the students of MSC.

Christine Doctor, Educational Assistant Suzanne's K: Hi. I am looking forward to another exciting year at MSC. Although I have spent the last four years at MSC, I bring 13 years of experience as an assistant teacher to the classroom. I have a 24 year old daughter who attended college and is now working for a private company in New Jersey. Again, I am looking foward to working with the children in activities such as cooking, sewing and reading books.

Carrie Goldberg - Visual Arts Studio at the Lower School: This coming year will be my seventh teaching Studio Art at MSC. I feel wonderful moving into this school year after having had a very inspirational summer. In July, I plunged into three workshops at the Lincoln Center Institute: (1) Cultivating Learning that Lasts (2) Literature as Art; Text, Illusion & Reality and (3) All Questions Are Not Created Equal. It was nice to have immersed myself in the sessions right after school ended, when the energy of the year had a way of spilling over into the summer. I enjoyed experiencing other participants perspectives, ideas, and delighted in educator Maxine Greene's unique and powerful wisdom. I came away each day fascinated by "Perception," and how each person's perception is valid, different, and to be celebrated. I see how taking the workshops has heightened my awareness of children's different points of view and their wonderful insights.

My husband and I moved this summer, and traveled a little, mostly in and around New York, as well as Canada, where his grandfather had built a house in the 1920's on Niagara Lake. There was no chance for lazy mornings -- dips in Niagara's freezing cold water woke us up each morning and readied us for day excursions to Ontario flea markets, where we discovered incredible "finds" we brought back home. We also experienced watching Thoroughbred Horse racing at the track! Back in New York in our new place, I became enchanted with potted plants, and they are constantly luring me -- they are such visual treats. You might wonder why I am mentioning this? Well, I am a big on being an observer, and each year I like to instill the "Art of Looking" in children, so they come to appreciate their visual environment and become interested in different forms in nature. I'm in awe of the spindly delicate leaves of a fern as well as the prickly round edges on a cactus, and I place them next to each other just to admire the contrast. I'm really happy to be back in the Art Studio at school. I will be taking a maternity leave as many of the children already know. This will probably happen in late November when I plan to have a "little one" of my own. I'm very much looking forward to the start of the year working with the dynamic staff, rekindling relationships with the returning MSC community, as well as meeting the new families and their children.

Claudia Fields - Learning Specialist: Hi. As a native New Yorker who grew up in the New York City School system I am excited to be continuing at MSC as Learning Specialist and Resource Room Teacher. I work with children individually and in small groups and with the teaching staff to develop classroom curriculum. I graduated from the Mannes Conservatory with a BA in Music Performance and from Bank Street College with a Master's Degree in Education. I have worked in the public school for ten years, six working with students with special learning needs and two years working in the Resource Room.

In my free time I love spending time with my husband and two children. I play the trumpet and enjoy music of all kinds. My husband is a musician, so our lives are permeated with music. I am also a runner, and try to make time for a run everyday. I also love going to the movies.
