Plans for the Year Have Begun--Get Involved Now.

We need your help to make this school year the best ever at MSC. Plans are underway that require parents to participate in many ways. We need your thoughts, your time, and your money.

We cordially invite you to get involved because your volunteer efforts help make MSC the vibrant school that it is. The PTA needs coordinators and activists for fund-raising, grant writing, class parents, hospitality and newsletter committees. If you want to be active in these committees, please contact any member of the PTA Executive Board—Robert Stuchiner, Andrea Brecker, and Dan Arshack.

We have heard it said that at MSC it is difficult to know how to be part of PTA activities. Because of that feeling, many families (new and returning) have not participated even though they have talents, abilities and resources that would greatly benefit our school. Please think of the PTA Executive Board as a resource for information. Feel free to contact any member of the PTA Executive Board if you have questions and to let them know your ideas, talents and availability.

If you have not already done so, please complete and return your Volunteer Form to the front desk. (Blank copies can also be found at the front desk). All families are asked to participate. The best way to get to know the families in our school is to volunteer to work together. And, we know that you will have fun and make new friends.

For Just A Few Dollars a Day
Our PTA fund-raising needs are especially acute now. We need to raise approximately $50,000 for this school year to pay for current PTA-supported programs (such as class trips) and other school expenses (books, art supplies and photocopy paper to name a few) that are not funded by the Board of Education.

When we meet this goal, we will have the opportunity to use additional funds to further enhance each child's MSC experience. For example, additional staff could be hired to work with teachers and children during core curriculum. We might start a program of physical education or provide after-school programs in the arts and sciences. We know that every family at MSC would like their children to have additional opportunities like these as soon as possible.

There are approximately 360 families at MSC this year. If each family were to give what they could, we would certainly achieve our goals. If you can, why not commit $250, $500, $1,000, $2,000 or more to MSC - Just think about it. For a few dollars a day you can have a material impact on your child's education. Please give what you can today.

Address your checks to the Friends of the Manhattan School for Children. Mail your check to the school or leave it at the reception desk. Within a few weeks you will receive a receipt acknowledging your gift. Don't forget that Uncle Sam subsidizes the cost of your contributions since they are tax-deductible. If your employer has a matching gift program, please provide the appropriate form so that we can ensure your gift is matched. Mark Your Calendars
On Thursday, October 21st at 6:30PM in the Lower School we will have a Family Meeting which will focus on MSC and New York State's mandate for School Leadership Teams. Polly Runyon is coordinating a study/focus group to consider how this mandate effects current MSC school governance. Please make sure to attend this meeting and read Polly's article in this newsletter. Also note that the Steering Committee meeting for October has been re-scheduled for Thursday, October 14th at 6:30PM at the Upper School.
