The fifth grade curriculum begins once more with a brief review and introduction. "Picturing Polygons" moves the study of 2-demensional in geometry into understanding the properties of polygons, particularly in the relationships among turns and angles. The third unit is "Name That Portion," and deals with fractions, percents, and decimals. "Between Never and Always," is the study of probability in which the students study verbal and numeric descriptions of probability and work to understand concepts of chance, probability and prediction. This unit is further developed in the unit "Building on Numbers You Know" in which computation and estimation strategies are developed through word problems using the four basic operations. In the sixth unit, "Measurement Benchmark," estimation is combined with measurement as the students use and compare metric and U.S. standard measure for length, weight, volume and time to estimate, order and compare. "Patterns of Change" is the next unit and is dedicated to building, extending and describing patterns and graphs and to comparing shapes to understand the relationships among distance, time and speed. In "Containers and Cubes" volume is explored with investigations into 3-d shapes and relating dimensions of a shape to its volume. The year's curriculum concludes with "Data: Kids, Cats, and Ads," a study in statistics and data analysis. In the sixth Grade the year begins with "Prime Time" in which number theory, primes, composites, factors and multiples are explored and reviewed. "Data About Us," the second unit, gives students the opportunity to formulate questions and research to generate, gather, organize and analyze data. "Shapes and Designs," a unit focused on reasoning about shapes and shape properties, develops skills in angle measurement. "Bits and Pieces, Part 1" develops students understanding about rational numbers, fractions, decimals and percents. The curriculum then moves into measurement of area and perimeter in the unit "Covering and Surrounding." The fifth unit revisits probability in a study of "How Likely Is It?" "Bits and Pieces, Part II "extends the earlier work on the use of rational numbers and expands it into computation, while the final unit "Ruins of Montarek" presents investigations in spatial visualization and spatial reasoning. Algebra is introduced to our seventh graders in their first math unit ,"Variables and Patterns," where they explore variables, tables, graphs and symbols as representations. These then develop in the unit "Stretching and Shrinking" where similarity, with congruence as a special case, is studied. In "Comparing and Scaling" rate, ratio, proportion, percent and proportional reasoning are studied. The fourth unit in the seventh grade sequence is "Accentuate the Negative" in which the curriculum works to develop understanding and the use of integers. Linear relationships as expressed in words, tables, graphs and symbols is the work of the unit called "Moving Straight Ahead." Three-D measurement is explored in "Filling and Wrapping. The final two units, "What Do You Expect" and "Data Around Us" revisit probability and number sense, integrating the students' more sophisticated mathematical understanding.
In the eighth grade the math program will move into a branched program with students involved in more advanced levels of mathematical process or entering into the Sequential Math. Stages of Development in Mathematical Thinking
