A Productive School Year

This year, MSC parent activism working in coordination with our Principal has enhanced our children's school experience through curriculum enrichment, community development, and teacher support. This year's highlights include:

  • Leading Change in the Science Curriculum: the Greenhouse at MSC Parents culminated years of work with the launch of the Greenhouse Project at MSC. The Sun Works Science Lab is designed to operate as an integrated part of science curriculum;
  • Protecting Teacher Professional Development Parents re-funded teacher and classroom development programming with the nationally recognized curriculum programs Math in the City and Teachers College Reading and Writing Project;

MSC Brings Its A-Game to Wellness Week

It’s not every day that a family athletic event is so naturally, utterly inclusive — and yet on Saturday, April 9, in various centers throughout the school building, MSC family members (of all abilities and all manners of movement) exercised together, sampling yoga and Zumba dancing, and playing able-bodied and adaptive basketball and hockey (with sport wheelchairs provided by MSC parent Victor Calise and the Wheelchair Sports Federation).

The Health Drive

As our school prepared for the opening of the now famous Greenhouse last year, Manhattan School for Children launched its Wellness and Green Team (see their cool logo, below) to support everything green and healthy that was about to come! Under the leadership of 2nd grade parent Melanie Sherman, they wrote a Wellness Policy that included food, fitness and sustainability plans for our community.

Helping Japan, One Muffin at a Time

Last year MSC bakers raised $1,400 to assist relief efforts in Haiti. This year we baked again, and were able to donate more than $850 to the Red Cross for aid in Japan. Goodies ran the gamut from professionally made treats generously donated by Kitchenette; an array of gluten and nut free items; and even sushi rolls and sashimi handmade by one parent (they sold out immediately)!
